Nutrition is the goodness that the food we consume provides us, keeping our bodies healthy and in good working order. Everything we eat contains nutrients of various types. This is what makes our meals nutritious! Carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, proteins, minerals and water are all nutrients. Failure to get an adequate supply of all the necessary nutrients will eventually result in malnutrition. This condition can make persons more susceptible to illness and disease and can also affect essential functions of the brain, organs, eyesight, height, weight, and also the formation of an unborn child.
The easy way to get all the nutrition required is to eat a well balanced diet. This will maintain a healthy body. Eating plenty of vegetables, legumes and fruit is an essential part of a healthy diet, as is eating cereals including grains, pasta, bread (preferably wholegrain). The consumption of lean meat, fish and poultry are desirable, this is what our not so distant ancestors consumed on a daily basis. Vegetarians can make alternative arrangements to provide their protein requirements. The consumption of dairy products is fine. There is debate as to whether the levels of saturated fats in dairy are actually bad for you, moderation is the key, but if you feel concerned about saturated fats, then consider low fat products.
Macro-nutrients
The essential macro-nutrients of carbohydrate, protein and fats are essential for health and well-being. How do we decide how much nutrient is required to prevent deficiencies? The National Academy of Sciences make these recommendations.
Protein: 10-35% Fat: 20-35% Carbohydrate:45-65%
Eating the correct quantities of these macro-nutrients can help in reducing the risk of chronic diseases, whilst providing all the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients we require. A healthy lifestyle can be achieved by regular exercise and a balanced diet with correct quantities of macro and micro nutrients.
How to Feel Great
Here are a number of ways to feel fantastic every day: Have a positive attitude - it is the most essential aspect of well-being. Drink plenty of water, a couple of Litres a day is good, if it's hot or you are working out drink more. Eating real food like fruit and vegetables is good. Reduce, and in my opinion, reject processed food completely. Get some exercise every day, once you get used to it, you'll enjoy it. Incorporate a strength training plan - get strong!
